Job Responsibilities

Job Purpose

The Biology Instructor is responsible to the Division Dean for Arts & Sciences for the delivery of quality instruction and management of students enrolled in biology and heath science courses. Job responsibilities occur in the areas of instructional development, teaching performance, student advisement, professional development and instructional management and include the following job functions.

Job Functions:

Instructional Development

1. Work with members of the Advisory Committee to participate in planning for science courses and programs.

2. Assist in the development of curricula for programs related to biological sciences.

3. Evaluate courses and laboratory activities, especially those in the biological sciences.

4. Assist in the refinement of curricula for the sciences and related programs.

Teaching Performance

1. Teach courses and labs as assigned and in accordance with the established syllabi.

2. Provide quality instruction for students on a regular basis, using a variety of instructional modalities at the different campus sites.

3. Assess the accomplishments of students on a regular basis.

4. Participate in the Faculty Performance Management System.

5. Achieve at least 3.5 on student evaluation and satisfactory peer/supervisor evaluations.

Student Advisement

1. Work with the Student Services Division in the selection, recruitment, admission and retention of students and cooperate with this division to utilize counseling services.

2. Advise and maintain records of assigned student advisees in accordance with division policy and procedures.

3. Provide effective academic advisement for students enrolled in the Arts & Sciences and Health Science related programs.

4. Cooperate with the Student Services Division in the placement and follow-up of students.

5. Maintain office hours as required and needed by students, faculty, and advisees.

Professional Development

1. Represent the Division and College by participating in community and professional meetings.

2. Attend relevant professional meetings.

3. Maintain a current awareness of educational innovations and trends appropriate to Surgical Technology education.

College Community Service

1. Actively initiate and perform effective student recruitment activities for the health science and environmental technology programs.

2. Implement marketing activities for the programs, especially the health science, nursing, and environmental technology programs.

3. Utilize the services of staff specialists and coordinators.

4. Maintain contacts with appropriate professional, industrial and community organizations/individuals in the College service area.

5. Serve actively on College committees.

6. Work cooperatively with other division faculty members and College departments to meet the educational needs of students.

Instructional Management

1. Foster and promote the Associate in Science and the health science programs.

2. Maintain proper control and effective use of all physical facilities and supplies in the assigned division, including the science laboratories.

3. Prepare reports in cooperation with division dean for input into the planning/reporting system.

4. Administer student regulations within the division.

5. Insure Communication of policies, procedures, and campus information to all students.

6. Recommend advisory committee members and agenda items and serve as a committee catalyst.

7. Prepare semester schedules for program coordination with other program instructors and Divisions Deans.

8. Perform additional duties, as assigned by the Division Dean for Arts & Sciences.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

Master's Degree with a major in Biology or Master's Degree with a minimum of 18 graduate credits in Biology. Two years teaching experience preferred.
