Description

The City of Placentia is searching for enthusiastic, creative, motivated team players who enjoy working with the public to join the Community Services Department! We are currently searching for Community Service Leaders to assist any assigned divisions and Senior Leaders assigned to Sports and Facilities!

Interviews are tentatively scheduled to begin the week of July 8, 2024.

Community Service Leaders: $16.00/hr

Community Service Senior Leaders: $16.23 - 17.23/hr

These are part-time, at-will, unbenefited positions. Hours may range from 15-25 per week. Must be available Monday through Friday, between the hours of 4:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., and weekends (shifts and hours may vary).

Community Services Leader:
An entry level position that assists with assigned programs, functions, and events. The Community Services Leader may be assigned to any program divisions.

Senior Community Services Leader:
The Senior Community Services Leader requires broader responsibility and specialized knowledge of City policies, procedures, and programs. The Senior Community Services Leader leads and performs varied and routine program recreational activities and may provide instructions or guidance to Community Services Leaders and volunteers. The recruitment for this position will be assigned to Sports and Facilities.

Examples of Duties

  1. Assist in providing customer service to internal and external customers; assist customers and/or participants with answering questions and providing activity/event information.
  2. Assist in planning, organizing, and leading a variety of indoor and outdoor program activities and/or systems at one or multiple sites.
  3. Assist in the set-up, preparation and dismantling of facilities, rooms, fields and special events as needed by assignment.
  4. Perform a wide variety of maintenance functions and light custodial tasks such as spot cleaning carpets, mopping, sweeping and wiping down tables as needed by assignment.
  5. Will be required to work a varied schedule of hours, which may include early mornings, afternoons, evenings, weekends and holidays, at a variety of City facilities.
  6. Observes safety and City rules and regulations; ensures park and facility users are aware of rules and regulations. Report maintenance and equipment repairs to immediate supervisor.
In addition to the above, examples of essential job functions specific to the following programs include, but are not limited to, the following:


If assigned to P.A.R.K's Programs:
  1. Participates in and lead community services P.A.R.K.'s programs, after school activities, and special events.
  2. Acts as chaperone during P.A.R.K.'s excursions and assists in the transport and monitoring of participants.
  3. Interacts with P.A.R.K.'s program participants, volunteers, and parents.
  4. Assists with preparing and maintaining attendance and activity records.
If assigned to Senior Center:
  1. Greet and assist Senior Center visitors; provide information about programming, events, and meal programs.
  2. Assist with all incoming telephone calls; transfer and direct calls to appropriate staff; take messages, as necessary.
  3. Assist the immediate supervisor/lead staff with Bingo, coffee socials, and other activities for Senior participants.
  4. Engage with Senior Participants that attend daily programming and special events.
  5. Obtain or be in the process of obtaining the ServSafe Food Handlers Certification within 30 days of employment.
If assigned to Facility Permits:
  1. Monitor and interact with members of the public who utilize City facilities.
  2. Open and close facilities such as City buildings and park restrooms.
  3. Assist with trouble shooting problems, while providing good customer service to members of the public using City facilities and parks.
  4. Supervise groups and individuals renting facilities and gyms; ensure that scheduling time limits are adhered to for each group using the facility.
If assigned to Field Ambassador/Sports Programming:
  1. Monitor and interact with members of the public and sports groups who utilize City facilities and sports fields.
  2. Open and close City facilities such as City Buildings, athletic fields, and park restrooms.
  3. Keep track of City facility usage, trouble shoot problems; provide good customer service to groups using City facilities.
  4. Supervise groups and individuals renting gyms and fields; ensure that scheduling time limits are adhered to for each group using the facility or fields.
  5. Travels to and from various City facilities in a safe and timely manner by driving a City vehicle.

Typical Qualifications


Knowledge of:
Common sports such as baseball, football, volleyball, and basketball; equipment and skills; safety standards and requirements; basic record keeping techniques, arithmetic and basic computer applications.

Ability to:
Learn, understand, and apply facility use policies and procedures; provide and administer basic first aid; complete attendance and activity records; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; maintain facilities and equipment in a clean and safe manner; effectively work and communicate with facility patrons and program participants; use computer hardware and word processing and spreadsheet applications.

Community Services Leader:
  • MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: All applicants must be a minimum of sixteen (16) years of age or older at the time of application
  • EXPERIENCE: Previous leadership, volunteer work, or recreation experience is desirable .
Senior Community Services Leader:
  • EDUCATION: Graduation from high school or equivalent, supplemented with one year of college level coursework in recreation, business administration, public administration or a closely related field
  • EXPERIENCE: Possess one to two years of experience coordinating recreation programs and activities is required.
  • LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS: A valid Class C California driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the City's Vehicle Insurance Policy is required for this position.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to obtain an American Red Cross or equivalent CPR, AED, and First Aid Certification.

Must be able to provide a valid work permit if under the age of 18.

Depending upon position assignment, a valid Class C California driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the City's Vehicle Insurance Policy is required.

Note: Possession of a current (less than two years) tuberculosis (TB) certification clearance slip by date of appointment. Fingerprinting at the time of hire is a state-mandated requirement for all employees having direct contact with minors

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this class, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, or walk; talk or hear, in person and by telephone. Lifting, straightening, and moving tables and chairs and/or equipment to arrange facilities for special events and/or meetings. Depending upon the position assignment, the employee is expected to demonstrate skills and participate in or lead sports and events. The employee may occasionally lift, move, and carry objects typically weighing up to 40 pounds. The employee must be able to physically lift, push, pull, and/or carry materials and equipment used for special events weighing up to 50 pounds.

Sensory demands include the ability to see within normal range, ability to use close vision and adjust focus, and talk, and hear, and use electronic touch keypads.

Mental Demands
While performing the duties of this class, employees are regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; read and interpret data, information and documents; analyze and solve problems; observe and interpret situations; learn and apply new information or skills; work with frequent interruptions; and interact with staff, management, contract instructors, vendors, the public, and others encountered in the course of work.


WORK ENVIRONMENT
The employee works in both office and field settings, and occasional travel is required to different community centers, events, as well as user group and public meeting sites. In the office setting, the noise level is frequently moderate, and typically below 70 decibels.


In field settings, the employee is occasionally exposed to loud noise during sporting and recreational activities which exceeds 80 decibels. The employee works under variable weather conditions at different sites and events.

Retirement - California Public Agency Retirement Services (PARS) PST Deferred Compensation Plan. Contribution to this account is 7.5% per pay period, the City pays 3.75% and the employee pays 3.75% deducted from salary. Additionally, e?????mployee pays 1.45% ???????towards Medicare per paycheck.

Part-Time Sick Leave - 24 hours of sick leave per fiscal year with a banked max of 48 hours.
