Unlike corporate media, Public Media Network builds and shares the power of media with people in the community. Amplify Kalamazoo trains and works alongside members of our communities to report stories that are often untold in mainstream corporate media. Working at the intersection of technology, civic media, video journalism, documentary storytelling, and activism, people can create inform and encourage people to take action through media. The Opportunity
This is an opportunity to join the Amplify Kalamazoo reporting team to find more ways to engage the community, serve more audiences, and connect people to news and information about their community. The role requires someone who is able to gather community input and curate, write, record, edit, and deliver local video broadcasts. Reporting will include daily stories of interest and impact in Greater Kalamazoo, moments of success and joy that the define local life here, and news-you-can-use that responds to audience questions and needs. The Broadcast Reporter will help mentor, guide, and train community reporters in the production of their stories, and will ensure stories are elevating the diverse lived experiences and voices in our communities.
Responsibilities & Activities:
Multimedia Reporting (75%)
· Value, contribute to, and sustain PMN's commitment to representing the rich diversity that is our community and amplifying stories that represent the experiences of all.
· Use compelling video storytelling and editing.
· Find and produce daily story packages, in-depth explainers, and news-you-can-use.
· Engage in community listening on a weekly basis and work with the news director, content studio team, and community action team to contribute that input into editorial perspectives.
· Keep up with the local news and cultivate expertise and sources in the local communities we serve.
· Record and produce daily newscasts for distribution.
· Produce monthly special feature packages. Report and produce daily multimedia packages to tell community stories that help people engage with civic life
· Actively incorporate and engage diverse perspectives and voices in the editorial process.
· Curate information sources to help produce newsletters to connect audiences with civic life.
· Post and update websites and other platforms with content.
Training (15%)
· Mentor, train, and support community reporters and fellows.
· Incorporate volunteer interests and engagement to support a citizen journalism storytelling initiative.
General (10%)
· Gather and maintain project-related data and draft periodic impact reports
· Assist with member and volunteer check-in, training programs, and facility/gear management.
· Assist with live meeting coverage and other productions as needed.
· Other duties as needed to help Public Media Network meet its mission.
Knowledge/Skills/Aptitudes
· Passionate video storyteller with experience in journalism, documentary, and/or media production.
· Aware, and stays informed, of critical community issues and trends.
· Skilled at fostering and maintaining internal and external relationships.
· Proficient in using media production equipment, social media platforms, and digital software.
· Able to work with diverse constituencies of our community with respect and integrity.
· Familiar with Greater Kalamazoo area.
· Willingness to learn and develop technology, media, and storytelling skills.
· Work effectively in a volunteer-focused environment.
Essential Physical Demands and Working Environment
· Ability to see, communicate, hear, and utilize electronic communication devices.
· Ability to provide transportation to travel to locations in the Greater Kalamazoo region as required.
· Ability to work irregular hours as needed.
Desired Education and/or Experience
Any combination of education and experience that provides the skill, knowledge, and abilities required:
· One year of television, media, or journalism experience.
· Or three years of media or journalism training at college or trade school/occupational training level.
· Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and maintain quality media production standards.
