JOB SUMMARY

We are seeking a highly qualified Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) / Medical Physicist to support the Department of Veterans Affairs’ George E. Wahlen Medical Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. The successful candidate will ensure that the facility complies with federal and state radiation safety regulations and standards, oversee safety audits, and provide expert guidance on radiation safety protocols.

MAIN OBJECTIVES

• Implement and maintain the Radiation Protection Program in compliance with NRC and NHPP standards.

• Ensure regulatory compliance for all diagnostic imaging and nuclear medicine equipment.

• Conduct safety audits and ensure adherence to ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principles.

• Perform annual physics evaluations and equipment certifications.

• Provide quarterly compliance reports and attend Radiation Safety Committee meetings.

• Train staff on radiation safety, including handling of radioactive materials and fluoroscopy safety.

SCHEDULE OF WORK

• Expected to work during standard business hours, with the flexibility to respond to emergencies within 4 hours if needed.

• Some tasks may require attendance at quarterly safety committee meetings outside of regular hours.

PLACE OF PERFORMANCE

• George E. Wahlen VA Medical Center, 500 Foothill Drive, Salt Lake City, Utah.

PERIOD OF PERFORMANCE

• Base Year: November 1, 2024 – October 31, 2025

• Option Year 1: November 1, 2025 – October 31, 2026

• Option Year 2: November 1, 2026 – October 31, 2027

• Option Year 3: November 1, 2027 – October 31, 2028

• Option Year 4: November 1, 2028 – October 31, 2029

QUALIFICATIONS

• Board Certification in Diagnostic Medical Physics (ABR, ABMP, or equivalent).

• Certified Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) as per NRC 10 CFR 35 requirements.

• Minimum of 5 years of experience managing radiation safety programs.

• Proficiency in compliance with NRC, NHPP, and Joint Commission standards.

• Strong communication skills and the ability to conduct training sessions.

• A Master’s degree or higher in a relevant physics or engineering discipline.
