The cost of opening, holding and closing positions can have a lasting impact on trading results. Small charges add up across frequent trades, while overnight fees become more significant the longer a position stays open. For South African traders, cost control also starts with how they fund and manage their accounts. Understanding these costs and how to manage them can help traders make more informed decisions.
PrimeXBT, an FSCA-regulated multi-asset broker and crypto asset service provider, combines competitive pricing with local funding options and rand-denominated accounts. Here are six ways South African traders can reduce their trading costs with PrimeXBT.
1. Trading in Rand
PrimeXBT offers rand-denominated accounts on its native PXTrader 2.0 platform and MT5 Standard, ZeroStop and Pro accounts, supported by a dedicated ZAR wallet. Clients can hold, transfer and use rand to fund their trading accounts without first converting to US dollars, or exchange ZAR for USDT within the platform. Other supported account currencies include USD, BTC, ETH, USDT and USDC, depending on the platform and account type.
The broker supports international and local funding methods, including Capitec Pay, Binance Pay and Neteller, as well as payments through major South African banks such as FNB, Absa, Standard Bank and Nedbank.
Together, these features let clients manage their trading budget in a familiar currency and reduce the need for conversions that may carry additional costs.
2. Choosing low-spread instruments
When trading short-term price movements, the difference between the buying and selling price matters. A tighter spread reduces the movement needed for a position to reach break-even, making entry pricing particularly relevant to frequent traders.
On PrimeXBT’s PXTrader 2.0 platform, traders benefit from low spreads, with EUR/USD spreads close to zero. Other popular instruments, such as S&P 500 (US500), NASDAQ (USTEC), and Gold, carry spreads lower than industry averages with 0.4 points, 0.8 points, and $0.35 respectively. The broker’s VIP Tiers program for high-volume traders offers further reductions on spreads.
CFD trading is commission-free, and clients can check the spread in the order form before confirming a position.
3. Unlocking VIP pricing
For active traders, the pricing available at high trading volume can be more relevant than a broker’s standard rate. PrimeXBT’s five-tier VIP program on PXTrader 2.0 recognises this through automatic upgrades based on volume over the previous 30 days.
At the highest tier, benefits include up to 25% off Forex and CFD spreads, Crypto Futures taker fees of 0.015% and up to 15% off Exchange spreads. The VIP spreads start from $0.17 on Gold, $19 on Bitcoin CFDs, 0.2 points on US500 and 0.4 points on USTEC.
New clients receive VIP4 tier automatically for their first 14 days through the VIP Welcome offer. It provides 15% off Forex and CFD spreads, 33% off Crypto Futures taker fees and 10% off Exchange spreads. This allows them to access lower pricing before meeting volume requirements.
Clients can also redeem their Rewards Center balance for 30 days of VIP status through the broker’s loyalty program.
4. Recovering costs through cashback
Through PrimeXBT’s Rewards Center, clients accumulate rewards by completing trading tasks and reaching volume milestones. They can redeem that balance for up to 10% cashback on eligible PXTrader 2.0 trading costs, with up to 5% available on eligible MT5 accounts.
For a South African trader whose eligible costs total the equivalent of R1,000, a 10% cashback rate would return R100, provided sufficient rewards are available. Redeemed cashback is fully withdrawable or can be retained for further trading.
5. Increasing margin with trading bonus
Clients who prefer to supplement their trading capital can redeem rewards as a trading bonus. This adds credit to the account, increasing the margin available without requiring an equivalent new deposit.
The bonus is capped at 5% of the account’s current balance, subject to sufficient rewards and applicable conditions. A client with a $1,000 balance, for example, could redeem $50 in trading credit.
The credit itself cannot be withdrawn, while returns generated from trading with it are withdrawable.
6. Planning for the cost of holding positions
A view on gold, a currency pair or a stock index may take time to develop. When planning to hold overnight, traders should assess the financing terms alongside their entry price and intended exit.
PrimeXBT’s Standard Swap-Free option replaces variable overnight swaps with a fixed administrative fee per lot. This makes the charge more predictable, although whether it is cheaper depends on the instrument and the regular swap rate.
Eligible traders can access Extended Swap-Free, which waives that administrative fee entirely. On PXTrader 2.0, it has no maximum holding period per position and no instrument exclusions. On MT5, the waiver covers the first 30 days of a position, with certain instruments excluded.
Competitive pricing for South African traders
PrimeXBT’s focus on low pricing gives South African clients several ways to keep more of their budget available for their trading plans. The most suitable combination depends on how often they trade, how long they hold positions and how they choose to use earned rewards.
Supported by rand accounts and local funding options, this approach combines competitive trading conditions with the practical needs of South African clients.
